Four-time Grammy winner Eugene Friesen exemplifies the creative musician. Throughout a career of collaborative music making Friesen’s cello has accompanied musicians from the world of blues, Arabic, jazz, rock, progressive, Indian, avant garde, gypsy, Celtic, bluegrass, Brazilian, folk, new age, classical, Broadway and more. With a reverence for tradition but a taste for innovation, Friesen makes exquisite use of the cello's profound gravity and soaring melodic qualities in stirring originals and works by J.S. Bach, but also swings and rocks in improvisations, jazz originals and contemporary pieces displaying the cello's incredible range and versatility.

The Universe Hangs on Sound
Steve Gorn, whose flute is featured on the 2011 Grammy-winning recording, Miho – Journey to the Mountain with the Paul Winter Consort, and the Academy Award winning documentary film, Born into Brothels, has performed Indian classical music and new American music on the bansuri bamboo flute, soprano saxophone and clarinet in concerts and festivals throughout the world.
Gorn’s unique blend of Indian music and contemporary world music can be heard on recordings with Paul Simon, Glen Velez, Jack DeJohnette, Paul Winter, Krishna Das, Jai Uttal, Tony Levin, Adam Rudolph, Layne Redmond, Richie Havens, Alessandra Belloni, Badal Roy, Simon Shaheen, Deepak Chopra, Robert Bly, Coleman Barks, and numerous Indian musicians. His recordings include Luminous Ragas, the landmark Indian-Jazz fusion recording, Asian Journal, Rasika (with Samir Chatterjee, tabla), and Illumination, with Nepali flutist, Manose.

This informal concert will feature participants of the October 7 - 10 String Institute workshops in solo, duo and trio settings. The evening will include musical surprises, special guests, spontaneity, good humor, and the full hospitality of the Arts Block bar and café.
